My flesh and my heart fail; but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. (Psalm 73:26)

In this psalm, Asaph is bemoaning the prosperity of godless people. They seem at ease, rolling in the benefits of a good life while being wicked to others and scoffing at God. Asaph is grieved by this seeming injustice, especially compared to his own hardships in being a godly man, but then his perspective changes: “When I thought how to understand this, it was too painful for me—until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I understood their end” (73:16-17). The destiny of the godless is destruction, desolation, and terrors (vs. 18-19) and Asaph realizes how wrong and foolish he was to be grieved about their prosperity. He turns to God in humility, understanding what he has in God, and claims, “My flesh and my heart fail; but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

May this verse remind you of the big picture and what you have in God.
