Proverbs is a book of truisms—wisdom for life that is generally true, not black-and-white promises that are always true. Set in the context of a father passing down wisdom to his son, Proverbs 3 begins by giving a compelling reason to obey the advice: “My son, do not forget my law, but let your heart keep my commands; for length of days and long life and peace they will add to you” (3:1). Again, the benefits of obeying the advice may be long life and peace, but aren’t always. Even still, they are wonderful likely benefits! The first part of the numerous wisdom given in this chapter is:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding…” (3:5)

“Trust in the Lord” is true and sound advice echoed throughout Scripture as being good for you, as being what God wants you to do. It’s interesting that trusting the Lord is paired and contrasted with trusting in your own understanding. It harkens to the truth that God’s ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:9; Romans 11:33) and His wisdom, knowledge, and understanding far surpass our own (Isaiah 40:28; 1 Cor. 1:25). May we take this good advice to trust in God rather than ourselves!
